Injured Gonchar practices with Penguins
Tuesday, May 12, 2009
By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar joined his teammates for an optional practice at Southpointe this morning.

Coach Dan Bylsma said Gonchar's status for Game 7 of the Penguins-Capitals series tomorrow night at the Verizon Center won't be determined until after the game-day skate.

Gonchar has not played since injuring his right knee in a collision with Washington left winger Alex Ovechkin.

Gonchar, who spoke to reporters today for the first time since he was injured, said he has an opinion on whether Ovechkin's hit was dirty, but he declined to share it.

The series is tied 3-3 following last night's victory by Washington at Mellon Arena.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

In all honesty, Crosby has grown on me. Maybe it's because it's no-longer every second ad on TV that features his smiling mug, or maybe because he has actually grown up.

Mind you, that play last night when he took a puck off his ankle and then took an awfully long time to get back to the bench. Directly led to a goal. He was out flying next shift, so it obviously was not broken. Times like that you've got to fight through the pain and get the hell off.

What happens to the Pens' chances tomorrow night if Gonchar plays?

its Game 7, there is no predictibility or what ifs in my opinion, its just a matter of anything/everything will happen, it will be exciting and a lot of unpredictable things will happen. should be an exciting game 7 for sure with 3 of the marquee players in the league going to head to head.

So how does, if at all, in your opinion, Gonchar's return affect the Pens' chances?

I don't believe it does, this is Malkin's, Crosby's or Ovie's game to win, not gonchar's. I know Gonchar is huge in terms of the Pens breakout game, but one of those 3 names I mentioned above is going to take this game on their shoulders to lead their team to the next round.

I think it's too early to tell. Gonchar at 100% is a huge addition. Gonchar at 60%? Minor upgrade from Goligoski.

There is no additional motivation with Gonchar's return, its a game... I think IF he comes back it will have little to no effect on the actual outcome of the game.

The pressure has to be mounting in Pittsburgh right now...RDS' program "Sports 30" broadcast a series of interviews with the players tonight, including Marc Andre Fleury and Philippe Boucher, as well as Sergei Gonchar.

Gonchar stated he will play if at all possible.
