Yeah but that crosscheck by Knuble was OTT...

It's the discipline thing for the Flyers...

GREAT game.

That's just incomprehensible. A 5-on-3 in OT in the playoffs?

Flyers discipline fails at worst time as Guerin burns Philly with 5-on-3 OT winner

PITTSBURGH (AP)-- Bill Guerin scored his second goal of the game after Pittsburgh went on a rare two-man advantage in overtime, and the Penguins went up two games in their first-round playoff series against the Philadelphia Flyers, winning 3-2 on Friday night.

Guerin, at 38 the oldest player on a mostly young team, took Sergei Gonchar's pass from center point and skated toward the net from the low left circle, faked a pass and beat goalie Martin Biron on a shot that deflected off the left post and into the net 18:29 into overtime.

Guerin also scored the goal that tied it at 1 late in the second period, and Evgeni Malkin tied it at 2 with 3:37 remaining in the third after rookie Darroll Powe's goal put the determined Flyers up early in the period.

Agreed, am sure that is something that was talked about on the trip back to Philly today, then will be the focus before game 3. Philly is always been a tough team, but this is just ridiculous, you don't give up a 5 on 3 powerplay in OT in the playoffs, that is asking for it.

Well said.

Flyers beat themselves in this one. A much improved effort overall by them, but sabotaged by their ill timed and unnecessary penalties in OT.

Flyers in trouble as series heads home

By DAN GELSTON, AP Sports Writer 12 hours, 51 minutes ago

VOORHEES, N.J. (AP)—The Flyers’ playoff predicament is a cruelly familiar one.

Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins lead Philadelphia 2-0 in this playoff series—just like last year in the Eastern Conference finals. This year’s quarterfinals shifts on Sunday back to Philadelphia for Game 3 with the Flyers looking to make this a competitive series—again, like last season.

At this pace, the Flyers are looking at a repeat scenario with a postseason exit.

The Flyers lost Game 3 at home with the series basically on the line in the conference finals last season, so there’s no guarantee a return to the raucous atmosphere those orange-and-black diehards add to every game will mean much other than a rocking arena.

“Our minds are in a lot better place than we were last year,” Flyers center
Danny Briere said on Saturday. “We’re feeling a lot better. I thought we should be talking about a 1-1 series. We win one game and we’re right back there.”

History is against the Flyers.

They have won only two best-of-seven series when trailing 0-2: Philadelphia won four straight after dropping the first two to Toronto in the 1977 quarterfinals and did the same thing to the Penguins in the 2000 Eastern Conference semifinals. All 17 NHL teams that have jumped out to a 2-0 lead in each of the last two postseasons have gone on to win the series.

The Flyers tossed those omens under the Zamboni.

“We’re coming back to our building thinking this is our game to have,” Flyers goalie
Martin Biron said.

It could be if Philadelphia eliminates the pesky penalties and undisciplined play that have led to the first two losses.

The Flyers were whistled for 34 penalty minutes in Game 1—not a total surprise for the NHL’s most-penalized team—then appeared to keep their sticks in check with only 6 penalty minutes in regulation of Game 2.

Overtime cost them big.

Mike Knuble extended his arms, not once, but twice into the back of Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik and was whistled for cross-checking. Claude Giroux picked up a slashing penalty only 30 seconds later, giving the Penguins a two-man advantage that Bill Guerin would cash in with the winning goal.

Knuble, a 12-year veteran, made his second costly mistake in two games. In the Game 1 loss, he tried banking a pass off the back wall, but the puck skittered to Malkin and he quickly snapped it past Biron for a 3-0 lead.

“Two games in a row something stupid happened to me,” Knuble said. “You feel like you’re single-handedly thwarting your team’s chances and ruining your team’s chances. You feel one way the night before, then you feel it again. You’re disgusted.”

Knuble, though, wondered if the cross-checking call was made to even things. Referee Bill McCreary had already called one cross-checking penalty on Penguins defenseman
Hal Gill in OT, so officials were looking for a Philadelphia infraction.

“I can be as mad as I want about the call and feel it’s unjust, but the fact is, I gave him the opportunity and that’s the mistake,” Knuble said.

Flyers defenseman
Kimmo Timonen questioned if the officials are treating his team the same as the Penguins.

“What I noticed was, I didn’t see the refs yelling at their bench at all. Not one time,” Timonen said. “I could see them coming over to our bench a few times. It makes you always wonder why.”

Timonen said the Flyers deserved the same respect from the refs as he feels they gave Pittsburgh.

“You see these guys going to the refs and talking to them, and it looks like (the refs) talk to them back,” Timonen said. “We go talk to them and they yell at us. It’s a little bit of a difference. It’s not something we can control.”

Flyers coach John Stevens hoped the players like captain
Mike Richards, Timonen and Simon Gagne were respected enough by the officials that they would at least earn the chance to explain their gripes and grievances.

Crosby, who has a goal and two points, liked how the Penguins scored twice on the power play in Game 2.

“I don’t think either team took any stupid penalties, but when you get opportunities on the power play in the playoffs, they’re big chances and you have to take advantage of them,” he said.

The Flyers need more than the open ears of the officials to beat the Penguins.
Jeff Carter, the NHL’s second-leading goal scorer, has yet to record a point and wasted a few open looks in Game 2. Briere and Knuble have not recorded a point.

If those scorers get going, and the Flyers can keep pushing Malkin and Crosby outside, they believe they can get back in this series.

Start slow and have the home crowd start booing, and the Penguins could make this series an easy repeat.

“They’re pretty loud, like Pittsburgh, so we can’t give them any reason to get loud,” Penguins goalie
Marc-Andre Fleury “It can turn pretty loud and turn into energy against us. I think we’ve seen (the crowd turn) sometimes, when we frustrate them and kill their power plays. If we do things like that, I think we can turn (the crowd) in our favor.”

^Notes: Flyers F Dan Carcillo will return after serving a one-game suspension for his whack to Penguins forward
Max Talbot’s head in the waning seconds of Game 1. … Stevens hasn’t decided if D Luca Sbisa will play.

SanFilippo: Which Flyers Will Show Up in Game 3?

Sunday, April 19, 2009

By Anthony J. SanFilippo
CSNPhilly.com Contbributor

You may have heard the belief that the Flyers played the perfect game Friday in Game 2 of this Eastern Conference Quarterfinal in Pittsburgh and still lost.

Linguistically speaking, it’s a fallacy. Of course, perfection, in its most banal form means unblemished, and that is hardly a word to describe the Flyers right now, now matter how much better they were in Game 2 than Game 1.

But, speaking in hockey hackney, they did come close, darn close.

The Penguins’ chances were far fewer despite their big shot total. The Flyers took away the middle of the ice nicely, forced Pittsburgh to adjust and had them befuddled until the penalty party started late in the game.

Now the Flyers face a do-or-die situation: win two straight games at home or trot out the old “wait ‘til next year” for the 35th time in a row.

They won’t look at it that way mind you. They will cliché their way through one game at a time and truly, that’s a pretty smart approach.

As Danny Briere said Saturday, “We can’t win four games tomorrow.”

Nor three, nor two, nor … well … depends on your perspective.

See, the Flyers, as they have been all season, are very difficult to read right now. They can be the team that is energized by a fantastic effort that fell short, and use it to fuel them even more in front of the home crowd in Game 3.

Or, they can just as easily have their confidence completely decimated because they left their guts on the Mellon Arena ice, weren’t rewarded, and will now be a shell of themselves and go meekly into the April air.

They’re saying all the right things.

“We’re healthy, we’re in the series here, just inches from winning the game [Friday],” said Mike Knuble. “We’re right there, it’s just a question of getting a bounce or two. We still feel we have room to grow.

“We’ve done a pretty good job defensively for the most part, keeping the games close. Maybe some of us can probably play better and get some breaks and bounces. I think there’s still room to grow and room to improve.”

But is it just a façade?

Are these Flyers really sure they can do more? They played one of their best games of the season Friday and have nothing to show for it. What more can they do?

“There’s a few guys who got hit pretty bad yesterday so we’ve got to do the same thing to them,” Kimmo Timonen said. “We are gong to go out there and punish these guys and play hard.”

Sounds like they plan on ramping up the emotion and physicality – but not to a level where it’ll lead to too many penalties – like Game 1.

“You can play hard and you can hit people hard without taking penalties too,” Timonen said. “That’s what we have to do tomorrow. We can’t go out there and get too much emotion and get penalties because we all know what kind of power play they have.”

Stevens concurred that ramping up the physical play will certainly be part of the gameplan.

“I think that [playing physical at home] will be pretty easy with our fans,” said the coach. “The atmosphere last year was, I think you almost had to be there to experience it, it was hard to describe. Certainly the atmosphere in Pittsburgh was pretty electric as well.

“We’re excited to get home and I think our guys are excited for that game tomorrow. They’re champing at the bit to get back onto the ice and climb back into this series and I think to do it at home is pretty exciting for us.”

Energy? Check. Emotion? Check. Excitement? Check.

A lot of “E’s” no? Thing is, using baseball parlance, when you have so many “E’s” the one thing you can’t logistically have is a perfect game.

But the Flyers are hoping that doesn’t translate to their scorekeeping in front of a national audience today.
