The venerable Montreal hockey scribe Red Fisher weighs in with his view of the series:

Habs have little hope vs. Bruins

"The No. 1 Bruins won five of six this season against the No. 8 Canadiens."

By RED FISHER, The Gazette
April 16, 2009

You have to know that some people in this city have their priorities twisted out of shape when you see one of the city's buses idling in Côte St. Luc with a sign flashing "Go! Canadiens! Go!"

Get real, folks: it's only a number of hockey games involving the Canadiens and the Bruins. Seems to me there are a lot more important things to worry about, such as putting food on the table in homes where so many people have lost their jobs during an economic crisis that is likely to get worse before it gets better.

However, all I'm hearing and reading about these days is: "What's better than a Canadiens-Bruins series?"

Sad to say: lots of things. Too many things. The earth won't move if the Canadiens lose this series, which opens in Boston tonight. It won't even if they move on to the second round.

All that's certain is that you're dreaming in Technicolor if you're among those who think the Canadiens are likely winners simply because they've made a habit of doing it so often in the past against the Bruins.

It's all in the numbers.

The Bruins finished No. 1 overall in the Eastern Conference with 116 points. The Canadiens finished No. 8 with 93.

The Bruins won five of their six games against the Canadiens this season.

The Bruins had seven 20-goal scorers, the most in the NHL. The Canadiens: three.
Boston goalie Tim Thomas led the NHL in goals-against average (2.10) and save percentage (.933). Canadiens goalie Carey Price, who won 23 and lost 26 this season, had a 2.83 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.

Whatever happened during the regular season doesn't matter now. It's a new start, but there has to be a reason for all of the above numbers. Furthermore, the Canadiens are going into the series without their best player, defenceman Andrei Markov, and there's no real reason to expect him back for this series.

You can mention over and over again that Price has had a so-so season, and you won't get an argument from me. If he can turn it around, starting tonight, good for him. It's what he's paid to do. He was an all-rookie team member last season, was anointed as a Patrick Roy and/or Ken Dryden clone by people who should know better. His problem this season is that he's allowed too many soft goals in critical situations.

There have been games when he hasn't been getting enough help from his defencemen and forwards - even with Markov in the lineup. Without him, Price can expect even more pressure - which is something no goaltender needs during the playoffs.

So how can anybody, in clear conscience, pick the Canadiens to deliver what would be the mother of all upsets? If they win two games, they'd be doing well after a season series in which they won only once. That one came in their home opener - in a shootout to rescue a game in which Montreal had led 3-0.

The best move GM/head coach Bob Gainey has made since taking over from Guy Carbonneau was to put together a No. 1 line of Alex Tanguay, Saku Koivu and Alex Kovalev. It's the line that brought the Canadiens into the playoffs, and it's the one that can make good things happen in this series.

The Canadiens know it, and so do the Bruins, so you can expect this trio to get special attention from a Boston team led by certain Norris Trophy finalist Zdeno Chara.

The Bruins' captain enjoyed a splendid season with 19 goals, 31 assists and a plus-23 rating. You also have the NHL's biggest secret among defencemen, Dennis Wideman, who matched Chara's 50 points and was plus-32. Markov was second only to Washington's Mike Green in scoring by defencemen with 12 goals and 52 assists, but was minus-2 in his 78 games.

Bottom line: during the regular season, the Bruins had a better offence than the Canadiens among the forwards, a better defence and a better goalie. If you're the Canadiens, how do you overcome that in a seven-game series?

Let's just say it's a high mountain to climb.

Boston in six.

May the Bruins lay a total beating on the Habs tonight... and never relent until the Habs are bounced in 4 straight.
