As I was writing a post for another thread, I look at the salaries that today's NHL superstars are pulling down, and the economies of Canada and the US spiralling down hill, which can only lead to a lowering of the salary cap, likely for quite a few consecutive years.
I believe due solely to financial constraints, more and more teams will be going to an internal team cap in order to maintain their viability.
Player salaries have yet to feel the effect of this downturn.
Give it a few years and we might be looking at the average NHL team being the following:
1 (yep count them)1 player with a salary of $7 million or more
1 player in the $5 million range
6 players in the 2-3 million range
6 players in the 1-2 million range
remaining 6 sub 1 million
less than 48 million per year. I think this might be a generous outlook. That includes the goalies too.
Some of the highest paid players may pay themselves right out of a job
