Interesting comments from Andre Roy about that hit on Alfie. How
no-one came to his defense. There was a discussion over on Sens Army
Blog on it, and someone suggested to bring up Yablonski. What do you
all think?

http://sensarmy.blogspot.com/2008/12/andre-roy-on-alfredsson-injury.html

Personally, this team needs to learn to stick up for one another, but bringing in a tough guy from Bingo will not help that. Yabo will be simply an outsider performing a ritual dance some call fighting. So you'd be bringing in entertainment, and not addressing the issue: this team does not stick up for each other. What the hell will it take? You know, even if Spezza won't drop his gloves, at least give the guy a nice hack with the stick. Take the 2 minutes but retaliate, for Pete's sake.

Agreed. Even the Mark Bell hit last year went unpunished. Outside of Neil, Bass, Ruutu, Smith, and Fisher this team is soft. There is toughness like a Volchenkov has, but it's not the same. When someone takes liberties with your Captain, someone, anyone, needs to stand up.

I partially agree on your take about calling up Yablonski. But the benefit there is that the guys on the team would actually for once see what is supposed to happen when someone takes liberties with our players. Yabo busting someone's head loose would certainly spark the guys, and maybe teach them a thing or two.

I still think that tough guys fight tough guys. You need someone to go after the guy who took out your guy. Two goons fighting may get your team a bit of a lift and get the crowd excited, but it will not draw the team closer or punish the guilty.

That said, I wouldn't mind a heavyweight who can skate some to play on the 4th line.

Nor would I. I think even for the intimidation factor. We lost that when Chara left.

Hey Spezza, want to know a way of instantly getting rid of all criticism from the Ottawa fans?

Drop the gloves with the next guy to do this (even if the other guy doesn't).

Doesn't matter if you get pounded, it's a guaranteed way to get back in the good books.

That is exactly what this team needs a non-fighter standing up. I really agree that is the root problem. These guys just aren't a team. Friggin Leafs are more of a team. When Neil ran whatever Leaf it was, Luke Schenn stood up, with Neil. Completely outmatched but at least he stepped up. It has happened WAY too much with this team, I am still personally offended about the lack of response for Bell's hit. That was a disgrace.

I agree with that, and the fact that he never will is why I cant stand him, and things like it.

Mostly along the lines of the original post, a commentary by Jim Hughson on what may be ailing the Sens. He rambles a bit, but I think he really hits the nail on the head at the end.

It is sad that no one on the ice came to his defence. I don't care if there were no fighters. Even a guy like Derick Brassard came to the aid of his teammate when James Neal hit him... And that was a clean hit... Granted Brassard ended up injured on the play, but the act that he was willing to fight and stick up for his teammate went a long way.

That was perfect! And it's not like Jere effin' Lehtinen is any bigger or tougher than Carlo Colaiacovo (although most of his body seems to be made of fine porcelain).

They've got to get that clip plus the one of Redden at the start of last season when he got in two fights (also against the Leafs) plus any other examples of non-fighters getting in there.

Was Spezza even on the ice for that hit?

While I agree in principle with what you are saying, how bad would it be if Spezza broke his hand on some chumps head?

I think a good scrap would benefit Fisher, his game is played with an edge.

I *think* he was on the ice. I feel terrible not being sure, because I was at the game

He's not a fighter so I wouldn't expect him to hit hard enough to hurt his hand. All he's got to do is jump in there and not get killed. It's to send a message that we'll jump you, don't care who you are or what. Let's face it, they're on ice and Spezza is a 200+ lbs guy, and whoever does the jumping usually ends up on top.

That's fair, but there really out to be other guys taking on that role, like some of the guys who are payed specifically to take that role.

Hey wprager,

Yes he was definitely on the ice. And yes, just bum rush the guy. You don't need to get in a real scrap and hurt yourself. Just let the rodeo begin. To not do so suggests that you really aren't much of a team, just a bunch of individuals accountable for your own safety and performance.
