Yes it was a bonehead mistake, but I'm not going to poke fun.... anymore.

It has happened to some of the best, even to our own Chris Phillips in the playoffs nonetheless.

But reading Eklund's blog, he really made a lot of sense (for once) about what Carbonneau did in "throwing him under the bus" and as well the fans mocking and booing him. Pretty classless, though we're talking the Montreal Canadiens fans (in most part), so I'm really not surprised.

Just when you think leaf fans are the worst, habs fans one-up them.

Now, would we boo a guy who scored on his own net like that and cost them the game?

Let's be honest, if he doesn't put that in his own net they win that game. I don't care what Ek said about Price letting in the first two. Yes, it happens, but he definitely cost them the game in my mind. Single handedly.

According to McGuire what Carbonneau did was shield him from further ridicule and abuse by the fans. He had a completely different take on how the management handled the situation. Pierre lives in Montreal and I'd venture to say he's more attuned to what's happening in Habland than Eklund.

Edit: I'm not reading Eklund's blog (not even sure if I can get it at work) so I may be way off base with part of what I said.

Man oh man...

I can't tell you how excited I got when that happened, not because it happened to this young nerd, but because it happened to the Habs.

That said, the fans in Montreal will always be the fans who threw a banana at Kevin Weekes or lights fires while rioting after a win or a loss (either way).

They're the most passionate fans in the league by far, but holy Dung they look bad sometimes. Chanting O'Byrne's name at the end was horrible.

In defense of Carbo though, there was 3 minutes left and the Habs were going on a PP. When was O'Byrne gonna play? In OT? Doubtful.

I thought he might put him in the shootout - but if he missed that, they'd be all over him worse right now.

It went to a shootout though, so it's still blame all around, but yes, obviously putting a puck into your own net doesn't help.

I think fans can be disappointed, sure, but we're talking the fans that riot and sign Latin soccer chants, and come into other teams buildings and boo the home teams captain.

This is more accurate than Ek's take. It's not even for the ridiculing, it's the fact that we're going to OT and there's no room for O'Byrne.

It was just that Ek figured he should have put O'Byrne back out there after the goal as a vote of confidence and let him redeem himself.

Well, if Carbo benched him to 'shield' him from further ridicule, then I would applaud Guy for caring enough to do so. If, on the other hand, he benched him out of anger, then I would have to say, sure it sucks that be potted a goal in his OWN net, but c'mon...

The main thing here is the sheer total lack of respect, and blatant mass retardedness of SOME habs fans... I'm STILL scratching my head at a bunch of fans who RIOT when they WIN a playoff series, let alone the opening round, NOT the EAST or cup final... Geez, part of me hopes the Habs totally TANK this season just to see how these OLE OLE retards react!! LOL

It does make sense that Guy did what he did to protect O'Byrne, hard to believe that he would do a mean thing like that really.

The fans on the other hand...

I tell ya, ever since I and then my father in law left Le Belle Province, the level of Hab fans has dropped significantly. Somewhere along the line they lost their identity. It's sad.
