That's what people said about Karlsson last year. Not that I'm saying it'll happen but if it comes down I think (hope) Murray would choose to ice the better team vs. ice the team of people on 1-way contracts.

Kind of sends a message if you have a 1-way contract you're safe no matter what and if you're a rookie on a 2-way you can forget about making the team.

Karlsson played his 9 games and was sent down. Then they did the flippy/floppy with Lee going down and Karlsson coming up. We'll see what happens this year with Cowen.

Well few people thought Karlsson could be an NHL'er last year and that we shouldn't burn a year off his ELC. Either the Sens thought he could do it with some time in Bingo and/or we badly needed a PMD that they took a risk on Karlsson.

Cowen can't be called up until Spokane's season is done Sad They're going to have to decide on what he does this year fairly soon.

That's reality, unless there are spots open. Besides, the cap situation is precarious as it is. Cowen's cap hit is more than Hale and Smith combined.

Yeah I know but I think it's nice to at least send a genuine message to prospects that if you play really well and outplay the competition the team will find a way to get you in.

It may be difficult even impossible in some cases.

If Cowen, Butler make a very compelling case then Murray will find a way through trades or waivers to make room.

Personally Lee and Campoli don't bring anything special to the team. Cowen (like Carkner the year before) brings physicality and toughness to the team that Lee and Campoli don't. We're missing Volchenkov and Sutton's presence.

If he plays well they'll find a way.

Carkner is also a 5-6 defensemen (as was/is Lee, Schubert Campoli). Cowen, Weircoich, Gyrba are 1-4 defensemen. In order to spot them we'd have to waive, trade or buy-out, Phillips, Karlsson, Gonchar or Kuba.

Same with Butler, he's a top-6 guy. So you'd have to get rid 2 of, Spezza, Alfie, Kovy, Mich, Fisher, Folgino, and Regin.

Just wanted to point out where your logic fails you: you named seven players for six top six spots. By your own logic, the team would have to waive, trade or buy-out one of the seven to make room for someone in the top 6.

Just thought I'd point out the downfall to your argument.

Fisher apparently has a sore neck and missed practice (shot from armstrong most likely). Shannon is back and will be in the lineup tomorrow! JOY!

I think that was his point. That the sens would have to get rid of two of those guys in order to create a spot in the top 6. 7 guys, because Foligno and Regin could probably fill in adequately as the number 6 forward.

I don't necessarily agree with him, i'm just pointing out what I believe his argument was.

Personally, i think a 3rd line of Regin/Foligno - Smith - Winchester won't really produce much. I love Winnie. He's strong defensively, and tries really hard. He seems like a really nice guy too. Demoting him would be like kicking a three legged puppy. But to create more offense, putting a guy like Butler, or give Butler a role in the top 6 and bumping someone else down would give the sens solid scoring threats, and a 4th line that can kick Donkey and pot in on the occasion.

My argument doesn't even take into account Butler. Forget about trying to fit him in. He listed 7 guys for six spots. By his own logic, even without the Sens trying to add Butler to the roster, they'd still have to move one player to make it a perfect six on the top two lines. I'm disagreeing with that logic.

5 of the top-6 spots are 100% taken. 2 of the 7 players mentioned (Foligno and Regin) couldn't consistently stay in the top-6 when given a chance. There's also Shannon who I imagine himself a top-6 forward as well. At this point we have no idea who will hold that last spot down.

scratch

I'll assume what I've bolded wasn't written exactly how you intended, otherwise I'm not sure how you'd disagree with the logic that you can't fit 7 people into 6 spots, well, unless it was the guys from the movie 'Stuck on you'

To your original post, I guess if we were talking about something other than Butler's chances (or any of our top forward/defense prospects) at making the Sens this season, then you'd have a point. But we weren't.

I pretty much built into my statement what you were alluding to. We currently have 7 top-6 forwards for 6 spots. Hence why we would have to move 2 players if we wanted to bring Butler up.

That was my point, if you don't have Butler (or any of our top level prospects) playing in key situations (PP, SH, end of games, lots of mins, etc) then you'll be stifling their growth. After some of these guys mature (ie winchester) and you can tell they won't be top level talent, then you can bring them up to the big club to fill holes or if they are a top level talent, then you wait till an opportunity opens up and plug them in.

If you want to talk about non-prospect roster moves, I'm open to it. But we've been talking about what to do about our prospects. Play them in the AHL vs playing in the NHL. And what would be the best for their future/career development.

Hahha, Stuck on You. I'd pay to see those two in the NHL.

Too bad about Fisher. That one was definitely a boarding call with a head-shot thrown in. What's a guy supposed to do -- if you continue "taking it" the opposition players will just escalate it. Sure, you end up taking a penalty on the play, but at least you try to fill the guy in. Problem is, Mike was on all fours and not really in position -- would've been nice to see someone step into Colby like they did for Alfie and Kalrsson, and really try to hurt him. Yes, I realize what I'm saying, but Armstrong showed great disregard for another player's well-being by ramming his knees into Fisher's head against the boards, when Fisher was in a prone position. What do you do to players like that? Seriously, someone should target to hurt him. I'm talking shoulder, collarbone -- not head or knee. That's the Chicago way Smile
