Marc Brassard of Le Droit reporting that Daniel Alfredsson will have back surgery this week.

Good, let's get it done and get him rehabbing for next year.

Why did it take so long? And why was he playing Tennis with Kovalev?

I don't know why he was playing Tennis but I do know he wanted to be absolutely sure surgery was the only option before going through it. That is why it took this long.

They should have had the surgery in Feb or Mar -- if it was that bad.

They wasted up to 4 mos of recovery & rehab... with him being fully ready for next season.

It's about just over 3 mos to training camp.... will he be ready?

6 mos is better healing time than 3 mos.

Someone blew this one.

the only person who blew this one was alfie, not the org. It was upto him and he wanted to exhaust all avenues before having to settle on surgery.

From what I understand, he worked his tail off to rehab it so he could avoid surgery, but finally succumbed to it so he can be ready for training camp. I suppose he could miss the first couple of weeks, but I doubt it personally. They would have the best and worst case scenarios for rehabbing and I bet the best case puts him back on ice competitively in mid-September, the worst case mid-October.

So what's the big deal? Anyone thinking we were going somewhere? Gives us one more roster spot to prepare the youngsters. Then, when they hit the wall around the 50-game mark (or sooner) we'll have a fresh Alfie making up for lost time. With any luck, the youthful exuberance (and great goaltending) will keep us close, and then Alfie will help we'll go on a tear and make the playoffs.

And then, lookout. Lehner will come in in game 4 and the rest will be history.

Yeah, basically. We're not going anywhere anyway - unless we sign TWO scoring wingers. Because as it stands now, we'll be competitive and work hard, but we won't score very much. If Anderson has a year similar to his 1st in Colorado, things could be slightly different, but I have a feeling Anderson knows as much as anyone else that it could be a year or two before the Sens come close to a playoff spot.

Unless they can pry a guy like Martin Havlat out of Minny, then we're starting to get somewhere I guess.

Let's wait until the lottery to get excited. I can't stand another year of that Dung - only to lose it in the final couple of weeks.

Don't forget, even this past season, as awful as they were (Kuba not playing, Phillips playing horribly, Gonchar playing horribly, Fisher pretty much not playing, bad goaltending -- until Spezza got hurt they still had a chance. Literally a 4-5 game winning streak out of a playoff spot.

If they don't get decimated by injuries, just the addition of Anderson makes them better in goal. Cowen and Rundblad are an upgrade over not having Kuba (who did we play -- Lee? Hale?), and certainly an upgrade over the way Kuba *did* play, eventually. Phillips and Gonchar should be better, if even byt just a bit.

So what remains to be seen is, can we replace the lost offense of Fisher, Kovalev, Kelly and Ruutu? A healthy Michalek easily replaces Fisher. Greening replaces Kelly. Butler replaces what Kovalev should have done. Smith replaces Ruutu.

Pretty much all upgrades over last year's performances. Am I the only one who sees this differently? I think we have a very legitimate chance ofmaking the playoffs.
