Hoags wrote:Meh a player like Shannon is useful when players get injuried but he's not actually any good.
He works hard, skates fast and scurries around the ice, is cheap and versatile but at the end of the day he doesn't put up any points and we lose.
I'd imagine a number of players in Bingo could do what he does, maybe not quite for so cheap but at least they're younger and have the potential to be something better.
We need someone who is Cussing good in a top-6 role and can be counted on.
CC juggles his lines and places Shannon on the top-6, PP, and even PK on that Flames goal but at the end of the day he doesn't do Dung.

Fair enough. Everything you are saying is true; but I just see more value in Shannon than you do.
I'm thinking nothing can change that and there is nothing wrong with that.

You're right CR he has good value.
I don't think we need value as much right now, we need some serious talent.
Sure it's nice that Shannon can fill so many roles, but he's not notable in any of them.
I'd rather fill his role with a prospect, even if he makes a few hundred thousand more if he has more potential to grow and surprise.
Shannon isn't going to surprise, we know exactly what we're going to get. CC keeps playing him with Spezza, on the PP etc. like he's suddenly going to explode and be a 30 goal scorer. Compare with Foligno who's just as frustrating on the scoresheet but is only 22 and still has potential.
I'm just a bit tired of average players on the team, especially if they're playing on the top line because the coach still loves from when he coached them in Bingo.

I agree Hoags. Particularly right now, I think I'd much rather see someone with more upside in that spot. Foligno is a good example--he had a tough start to the season, but is pacing well now. I'd love to see him or Butler playing top line minutes. Shannon is a very useful utility guy, but I think we have quite a few of them. We're heavy on bottom-6 talent; I think we need to see who, if anyone, is projecting to play in the top-6.

I agree with all that Hoags and Spader, I really do.
It doesn't change the fact that he can do a bit of everything for only $625,000. What do you expect from someone who makes that much.
Here is a list of the other forwards in the NHL on one-ways that make that little or less:
Cody McCormick, Raitis Ivanans, Tim Jackman, Ryan Carter, Jiri Tlusty, Bryan Bickell, Fernando Pisani, David Koci, Andrew Murray, Derek Dorsett, Jean-Francois Jacques, Steve MacIntyre, Jack Skille, Kevin Westgarth, Brad Staubitz, Jeff Halpern, Tom Pyatt, Mathieu Darche, Cal O'Reilly, Wade Belak, Sergei Kostitsyn, Rod Pelley, Adam Mair, Zenon Konopka, Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau, Frans Nielsen, Brian Boyle, Paul Bissonnette, Craig Adams, Mike Comrie, Jamal Mayers, Cam Janssen, Matt D'Agostini, Nate Thompson, Adam Hall, Mike Brown, Tanner Glass.
That is all of them. Yes, there is some skill there, some are on their first contracts, but I can't use that as an excuse because you said yourselves that you want to give the young guys a chance to take Shannon's spot.
Really all I tried to do with that list is show that Shannon is as good as it gets for his salary.
In reality, salary means nothing to Ottawa going forward as they will have lots of room, so yeah, Shannon will most likely be gone. I still like him though and some other team will too..

That's the whole point. While I agree that Shannon provides excellent value for the money, I'd much rather see if someone with greater upside can work his way into the top-6 (and stay there...looking at you Foligno and Regin). Shannon is, undoubtedly, a great utility guy, and an excellent return on the trade for Nycholat (who?).
Basically, nothing against Shannon, but I think he's a known quantity. I want to see if we can convert one of these prospects into the real deal. I'm hoping that a Butler/O'Brien/Smith/Winchester can surprise and push Shannon out of the way as he (or they ) earn and keep a spot in the top-6. And, of course, I want to see Foligno up there finishing his development and taking one of those spots.
Fair enough. I have been agreeing with you for awhile in my mind, yet still, finding something to debate with you at the same time. Haha.Hoags wrote:Ultimately Shannon has 11pts after good opportunities on the top-6, PP etc.
Having someone like that in our top-6 every night just shows how bad we are. CC seems to think he's the next Martin St. Louis.
He's a nice player to have when injuries hit but if we are counting on him to contribute regularly well then that shows why we're 29th overall. I'd rather play someone who COULD be a top-6 (Butler).
The more of our prospects pan out to be NHL legit players the sooner we return to contention. We'll never know if we've got guys like Shannon taking up a top-6 spot.

In this case, it is well deserved.
