I tallied up the few nominations we got in the GMH 09-10 Awards thread, and these are the leading vote getters.

Daniel Alfredsson (OTT)
Patrice Bergeron (BOS)
Tim Connelly (BUF)
Matt Carkner (OTT)

You may vote for one of these four players.

* Matt Carkner received one vote, however only one player per team can be nominated, so Alfredsson's votes cancel out Carkner's.

**By popular demand, Carkner has been added!

Carkner. There isn't really a better story right now that I can think of. If pressed to vote for one of these, I'll go Bergeron.

I think a good choice would be Erik Johnson. Having a pretty good year after that nasty golf cart injury forced him to miss the entire season last year.

But he *did* miss an entire season. Alfie is my pick for obvious reasons. This guy's 35, not very big, always targetted, always playing in all situations, and always comes back sooner than expected.

But that's what the trophy is about:

The winner is selected by a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association
after each team nominates one player in competition. It is often
awarded to a player who has come back from career- or even
life-threatening illness or injury. A player can win this trophy only
once in his career.

To me, Johnson or Booth would be a good choice. Alfredsson honestly has no case for this award and I don't think he will be nominated.

You missed the nominee voting stage, but so did a lot of people. Basically asking members to submit 3 nominees for each award, then would tally up the votes and the highest three would get in to this stage. There was not a whole lot of nominations, so we had a few ties, which is why we have more than three choices for some awards.

Alfie is 37 Smile Even a better reason to choose him.

Alfie knew that.

And I don't want to argue, Big Ev, but the Masterton is about perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. It is *often* given to someone who comes back from a career or life threatening injury or illness, but it absolutely doesn't have to be.

I wanna throw out Carkner again. Is that not perseverance at its peak?

Yes, I agree Carkner can fit the bill for the award, but I don't think they would give the award to a guy who is pretty much just a fighter now.

I'd rather give it to Carkner than some guy who fell out of a golf cart !

What!? Come on Big Ev, Carkner is much, much, much more than a fighter. I haven't checked his average TOI this year, but I bet it's up in the 17, 18 minute a game area. He's been a steady number 5 guy all year long and as an addition, he can also throw them with the best of them.

You also forgot that Carkner is a very reliable penalty killer as well.
