I hope hartsburg puts this article in the locker room - I'll predict a 5-6th place finish.

And to think I actually thought The Hockey News knew what they were talking about.

He (the author) will feel really, really stupid about about half his picks. His placement of Ottawa may not be as bad as some of the others picks -- Rangers in 11th? Buffalo in the playoffs? Washington in 3rd may be the safest bet of all his predictions, and that's only because of the silly division rules.

Washington is going to absolutely dominate. They'll be top-2...no need to worry about third.

Oh yeah. Washington, Philly and Boston are going to surprise a LOT of people IMHO.

In regards to the Sens, I have to agree with Hayden. At least a 5th to 6th.

With all due respect to Ovechkin (my favorite player int he league) and Boudreau, the Caps did not turn it around until they got Huet. Theodore has had more bad years than good. If he plays like he did that one series against Boston, then #2 is definitely possible. But that's a huge if. And heaven help them if Ovechkin has an injury the way Sid did last year, since they have no Malkin to step in a pick up the slack.

Boston is a big question mark in my opinion. There is a reason why Thomas didn't get to the NHL until he was 28 or 29 (and only 4 games that year) and was still in the AHL when he was 30. And if that's not a big-enough question mark, there's also Ryder and Bergeron.

Philly I like, but I doubt they will surprise anyone.

Adam Proteau doesn't know what he's talking about at all. I've read most of his articles and find them all lacking badly in the knowledge department.

Means nothing, the real Hockey News Yearbook had us in 6th I believe.

This is probably a reasonable prediction.
Unless Montreal implodes, at which point we may be looking at a #2/3 spot.

We'll be hard-pressed to come out of the second round, although I think we were saying the same thing a couple of years ago...

Get us there and then let Hartsburg and the guys play Flyers style hockey from last spring. Hard to play against, smothering, decent goaltending and young firepower. We might surprise some people. Smile

This I agree with - the team is built for the playoffs. That is, it has the firepower, but can also play in the rough, "put the whistle away", low-scoring games that it couldn't seem to handle before. A lot will depend on Gerber/Auld/Elliot/whomever comes in.

I think the Sens may win the division, but will finish no worse than seventh.

Murray is clearly rebuilding the Anaheim franchise in Ottawa. A few top-end skilled players, a big defence, decent goaltending, and good character players are what he is hoping for here. By bringing in depth that will not hurt the team (Carkner, Bell, Richardson, Isbister) when they play, the Sens are better suited for a long playoff run.

Does Proteau have a point? Absolutely. I do not anticipate a great start for the Sens, but I think they will find their rhythm by Christmas time. There are too many new players in a new system this fall, and there are bound to be hiccups. The team's pre-season play leaves them at 3-2, but they still have a long way to go. I am glad they only have one game between Oct. 6-16. The Sens season doesn't really get underway until October 17th.

I don't really think he's too far off... It's hard this year to make predictions... Especially in the East.. It's so wide open, almost any team is capable of making the playoffs... Good teams will miss the post-season and really it's not that big of stretch to say Ottawa won't be there... Heck last year we had to have help from other teams in order to make it!

Also, Dobber predicts us as finishing with 45W, 28L 9OTL, and 99P, putting us in the 5/6 slot in the east. And in Dobber I trust.

I think 5 or 6 seems pretty logical for us... I still think we have a really good shot at winning the division though and getting a top 3 spot...

this is just based on what games I saw in the preseason:

Montreal > Toronto > Tampa > Ottawa > NYR > Philly > Buffalo

(I didn't see any other teams play yet)
