Is Stralman good enough to replace Dion when hes traded to us for Heatley?

I dont think he is but Pardy who Calgary recently resigned has been compared to be a cheaper version of Phaneuf. Calgary has added some nice depth since the draft so I have been wondering if they would be interested in putting something together where its Phaneuf and picks for Heatley.

I liked Stralman a lot. 22 years old, not logging big minutes, but slowly learning. He had 13 points in 38 games and his body is big enough to allow him to expand into a 20 minute D-man - and judging by his numbers, he may have hit somewhere in the 40 point range.

Anytime you acquire a 2nd rounder, it's a good thing, but the farming that went into this particular player already means it's an interesting choice. But...who am I to argue with the great Burke.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but the 2nd rounder is in 2011... not next year.

As per TSN:

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames completed a trade on Monday. The Flames acquired forward Colin Stuart and defenceman Anton Stralman and the Leafs' 7th round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft for forward Wayne Primeau and the Flames' 2nd round pick in 2011.

Not a fan of this deal, but again, whatever.

What does it matter that Stralman was a 7th round pick?

The only sense this makes is Calgary clearing space, and Toronto overpaying for a second.

Stralman just wasn't Burke's type of player I guess. And noone can say he didn't get a shot in TO. He's played 80 games over the course of a couple of seasons. Despite his potential he hasn't lived up to his advanced billing. I remember the Leafs' fans talking like this guy walked on water....not so much anymore.

Primeau is underrated too. He can play in all situations and adds toughness. People are talking like the 2nd is the only thing the Leafs got. He can give the Leafs some valuable minutes, can PK, and could pot 10+. Not too bad.

Stralman was a great prospect and was only getting better.

Not truculent enough.

The view from Toronto:

Leafs add grinder in Primeau
July 27, 2009, Paul Hunter, TheStar.com

The Maple Leafs have broken the log jam on their blueline slightly by acquiring a little more jam up front.

Toronto has picked up Wayne Primeau, a 33-year-old journeyman grinder from Calgary in exchange for defenceman Anton Stralman, forward Colin Stuart and a seventh-round draft pick in the 2012 draft.

While Primeau doesn't fill the Leafs' need for offence - he didn't score in 24 games with the Flames last season and has just 66 goals in 715 career games - he is a prototypical bottom two-line guy in the world of Leafs' general manager Brian Burke. Big at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, fearless and willing to mix it up in the corners, he's also regarded as a solid dressing room presence.

Burke, in an email Monday night, said he liked, Primeau's "size and compete level."
"He can really help us if he can stay healthy," continued Burke.

Primeau, whose brother Keith was a star in Philadelphia and Carolina, missed 58 games last season with an ankle injury that he says was the result of "a freak accident" when he was hit by a Dion Phaneuf slapshot at the tail end of a practice. It was at first diagnosed as a bone bruise and Primeau kept playing but it got worse until a foot specialist found multiple fractures in the ankle and he went under the knife.

"They had to go in and remove some pieces and shave it down. It was a tough season," he recounted in a telephone interview Monday night. "To miss the last 60 games and the playoffs was really tough."

Primeau said the ankle is fully healed. In fact he was on the ice Monday with Keith teaching at a hockey camp in the Owen Sound area where he spends his summers. That's where his wife found him to let him know that Calgary GM Darryl Sutter was trying to reach him.

"I figured I was on the move," said Primeau, who is joining his seventh NHL team. "I turned to my friend and said that if I'm going somewhere, I hope it's Toronto."

Primeau, a product of the GTA, was born in Scarborough, lived in Markham until he was 5 and then was raised in Whitby. But more than just happy to be coming home, he's pleased to be reunited with coach Ron Wilson for whom he played for during his best seasons, including a 29-point campaign while with San Jose.

"I really enjoyed playing for Ron," he said. "He was just one of those guys that if you worked hard he rewarded you and he just showed a lot of confidence in me. A big part of hockey is confidence and he brought my game up to another level."

While trading a 23-year-old prospect such as Stralman for a 33-year-old will raise a few eyebrows, the truth is that the young Swede didn't have much of a future in Toronto. While he played well on the world stage for his home country, Wilson never really warmed to Stralman and he was mired in 10th on the defensive depth chart.

Burke wrote Monday night that he is still looking to move another defenceman, or at least listening to offers, though last week he said he'd be "shocked" if Tomas Kaberle - the player who could likely bring the most in return - wasn't in Toronto's opening night roster.

"(It's) still crowded back there," he said. The Leafs have nine defencemen who will arrive at camp with realistic expectations of being on the NHL roster.

The departing Stuart will likely be the answer to a trivia question one day. He had been Leafs' property for less than a month, arriving from Atlanta with defenceman Garnet Exelby on July 1 in a trade for Pavel Kubina and Tim Stapleton.

meh in Toronto circles, it was a genius move, but in the real world, really nothing of substance, it helps Calgary more, Tuk was right on that one.

Burke has convinced Leaf nation that what he is doing is what they want. A tough team that will try to emulate the broad street bully Philly team of the 70's. What is being left out is that there isn't much in the way of elite talent on that team. I'm sure a large portion of Leaf nation will be satisfied as long as they beat up on other teams physically but still lose the game.

Taylor Hall might look good in blue and white.

And the Flames win the trade because they get The Graaf Sisters for a night as well.

So, combine this with the Atlanta deal and you have Kubina, Stralman, Stapleton and a 7th in 2012 for Exelby, Primeau and a 2011 2nd?

Are you ****ing serious?

If I'm Murray, I'm calling Burke now and offering Jason Smith for Tomas Kaberle.

I think Murray is still pissed at Burke for genius-ly stealing Kadri from under his nose. :^^^^:
