DETROIT (ESPN/AP) -- Don't be fooled by the scraggly semblance of a beard that strains to cover chunks of Sidney Crosby's 21-year-old face.

He's most definitely still Sid the Kid, but with a tough loss to the
Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup finals under his belt, the young Pittsburgh Penguins captain has the experience that could make a difference in the rematch.

"There's no surprises this year," Crosby said Friday. "We know what to expect. Even a simple thing like today, coming in we know what to expect."

For the first time since 1983 and 1984 when the
New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers split a pair of titles, the NHL championship is a rematch. The Penguins hope to equal the Oilers' feat of losing in the final round against a dynasty team and wresting away the Cup the following year.

It hasn't been done since.

"We know our opponent," Crosby said. "Last year that wasn't the case. There shouldn't be any anticipation, really. We know what to do. We've got to go out there and do it."

Edmonton's win in 1984 ended the Islanders' reign of four straight titles and started the Oilers' run of five championships in seven years.

The Red Wings, who have won four titles in 11 seasons, are built on a foundation of older stalwarts such as captain Nicklas Lidstrom, Tomas Holmstrom, Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby. They are bolstered by relative newcomers Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, their top two regular-season scorers.

Detroit won in six games last year and is looking to become the first NHL team with back-to-back championships since the Red Wings did in 1997 and 1998 with several of these players.

"It's fun when you look back at some of the pictures when we tried growing beards and still had a little of the baby fat going," said Maltby, a four-time Cup winner. "Now the roles are reversed and we're the older guys. To be able to get here for a fifth time is something I never would've dreamed of."

The series starts Saturday night in Detroit with Game 2 shoved in on Sunday. It is the first time finals games will be played on consecutive days since 1955. And to think, a few days earlier the talk was how the NHL foolishly planned to have eight days off between the conference finals and the championship round.

The banged-up, older Red Wings expect to have Lidstrom back on the blue line Saturday after he was forced to sit out the last two games of the conference finals against Chicago because of an undisclosed lower-body injury.

Draper, sidelined for all but four games during this postseason, should also return along with defenseman
Jonathan Ericsson -- just a few days removed from surgery following a bout with appendicitis.

Datsyuk is still the biggest question mark. He practiced Friday morning, but will be a game-time decision. The Red Wings could have used more time off, but now face the prospect of playing four games in six nights and five in eight.

"We have two of the greatest teams in the world, star power-wise," Red Wings coach Mike Babc0ck said. "I don't think we need 14 days off, but there's a reason the NFL who, in my opinion is the biggest promotional horse maybe besides NASCAR, takes two weeks off before the Super Bowl. It's called to hype it up.

"We had a ton of time. I mean, I could have went bear hunting every series in between games. The bottom line is we're here, we're ecstatic to be here, and we're excited to be playing the games wherever they're scheduled and whenever they're scheduled."

At least Detroit will be starting a series at home for the 20th consecutive time, a streak that began in 2001.

Marian Hossa was acquired by Pittsburgh at last year's trade deadline to be the scoring winger alongside Crosby. Soon after the Penguins fell short against the Red Wings, Hossa surprisingly signed a one-year deal with Detroit for less money than he could have made with the Penguins.

The Red Wings provided a prime chance to win an elusive championship. Both the Penguins and Hossa said it was strictly a business decision and that no hard feelings exist.

Time will tell.

"Of course the winning situation was one thing, but another reason why I chose this team was because of the group, (
Chris Chelios), and Nick, and Draper and Maltby," Hossa said. "The experience can help me in the future. Learn something new from those guys, why they're winning so well and why they're going so well during the years.

"So it was not about the best chance to win, because Pittsburgh had an unbelievable team. That's why it was so difficult. It came down to two choices. I could be a good scout because I picked the two best teams right now."

The Penguins have surged since February when coach Michel Therrien, who took them to the finals last year, was fired. Pittsburgh was in 10th place in the Eastern Conference and in danger of missing the playoffs.

Dan Bylsma, who played under Wang in 2003 when Anaheim reached the Cup finals, was promoted from the AHL to head coach and led an 18-3-4 finish that vaulted the Penguins to the No. 4 seed.

Crosby and fellow superstar
Evgeni Malkin are tied for the NHL playoff lead with 28 points. Crosby is on top with 14 goals, and Malkin is right behind him with 12.

"You dream your whole life about being in that position and you work so hard, and right at that moment you never know if you're going to get another chance," Crosby said of the finals loss. "We feel pretty fortunate to get a second chance here."

The view from the Pens and Wings web correspondents at VERSUS:

BRIAN METZER: PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

Why the Penguins Will Win Game 1
This is not the same Pittsburgh Penguins team that was completely overwhelmed in the early going of last season's Stanley Cup Finals by these same Red Wings. This group has depth, confidence, superstars that are performing at the top of their game, secondary scoring, special teams that are heating up and a hot goaltender. They have been all business and realize that these opportunities do not come along every year. This group of Penguins is very hungry and works harder than just about any team in the league. They are executing better than at any time over the past two seasons and that will push them to victory.

Why the Red Wings Will Lose Game 1

Though Chris Osgood has rebounded from his mediocre season during the playoffs, I still feel he can be this team's Achilles heel. He is a great first-save goaltender and one that thrives in the Red Wings' system, but as the Penguins have proven thus far in these playoffs, they will launch upwards of 40 pucks against any team in the league. They have also been doing a better job of creating traffic and misdirection, which will get Osgood moving around. When you mix traffic with 35-plus shots and the rebounds that come with them, you get a recipe for offensive success and one that will knock off the Red Wings in Game 1.

MARK SPIZZIRRI: DETROIT RED WINGS

Why the Red Wings Will Win Game 1:
Detroit’s defensive play during this postseason has held opponents to only 2.12 goals per game in 16 playoff games. Although the Penguins are the stiffest “offensive” test Detroit has faced in the postseason, Pittsburgh also has not faced a team as deep and talented as the Red Wings.

Why the Penguins Will Lose Game 1:
Pittsburgh faces a significant jump in class in facing a Red Wings club that can roll four lines and have a multitude of defensemen. Despite Pittsburgh’s high-flying ways during this playoff run, Detroit’s defense could frustrate the Penguins in the same manner as Games 1 and 2 of last year’s Finals.

I just can't put a finger on this team. Pittsburgh, that is. How could they have ever let Washington get to game 7, if they are as strong as everyone thinks? Was Gonchar really that important for their success (in which case, just how is that knee doing?) Would anyone have any trouble believing that Detroit is better than Washington in just about every sense? And even in the Philly series, that probably should not have gone more than 5 games, perhaps even a sweep (don't forget the injuries). When they swept Carolina I really felt that it would go 7. Now, it could be that Carolina is a two-trick pony, and the ponies were just all done after Boston. Maybe, just maybe, Pittsburgh has lucked out in getting to the Finals because, really, they have not played against good opposition. They missed King Henrik and the Rangers, they missed Chara and Boston, and they missed Brodeur and the Devils. It's like Bylsma stood there, holding his staff up in the air and the Red Sea just parted before them.

Ha, decision, decisions. I still have not made my picks for the pool. One hour left, give or take. Time to go see if CBC will show some of the warmup.

WTH? I checked earlier and the guide showed a 1 hour pre-game show on CBC, 7-8. Now they've got "This Hour has 22 Minutes" and the pre-game doesn't start until 7:30. I wanted to see the pre-game warmup, dangit!

FIVE LONG-SERVING RED WINGS LOOK FOR THEIR FIFTH CUP RING

You haven't seen them replenishing their electrolytes while dripping
beads of neon-coloured sweat in a Gatorade commercial, but you have
seen them hoisting Lord Stanley's Cup and waving to the crowds as they
parade down the streets of Detroit in June.

Why does everyone say Hossa turned down more moeny to play in Detroit? He's getting $7.45M from the Wings, while the Pens' offer was a little over $7M. I realize the term was 7 years, but I would have said he opted for a bit more money versus the security of a long-term contract. Who knows what he'll get on his next contract, and where. Although with the shringkning cap, it's possible he will not get $7M for the next 6 years (he would need $7.092M/year average to total the $50M of the Pens' offer).

Sorry, just some idle ramblings while waiting for the pre-game show to begin.

Just sent my pick in after watching that bit with Mario talking about Sid. Two quick comments:

1. Mario's been practicing up to take over for Marty in the Delissio ads or what? Looks a little more like Mario from Donkey Kong now.

2. Sid is still living in his house? No wonder he can't grow a playoff beard.

OK, let's get this one started!

An excellent first period from both teams...which augurs well for this series...

The 'Detroit Bounce' off the end boards for goal number one, but they all count, eh, and the Wings used that to turbocharge their tempo.

But Geno Machino's fierce forechecking paid off as he forced the Wings to cough it up...and his rocket rebounded on Ruslan's quick stick, catching Ozzy off guard.

Some darn good hitting as well--both Hoss and Zets getting clocked--with the refs lettin' em play.

All tied up at one after one...just the way we like it.

Stout stuff!

Pretty good second period as well. Detroit weathered the storm early and killed of the Penalties.

Failure to capitalize on their power play opportunities hurts the Pingus so far... though the Pens pressured well--including a Geno breakaway--and they nearly popped one past Oz.

But the Wings' One Minute Drill is the best in the NHL, and their end of period swarm pays off with The Mule muscling one past Marky Flower.

Chris Kunitz has been noticeable for his crappy backchecking...and Mr Hossa, in contrast, is getting the job done in every possible way.

Terrific game!

Couldnt be happier to see the better team winning right now. This is without perhaps the best al around player on earth not playing in Datsyuk.

1 down, 3 to go. It would be nice if this series was 1/2 of in less than 2 days!

Pittsburgh perhaps deserved a better fate. Osgood probably owed his team-mates a game like that after the regular season, though.Wink

Detroit's depth continues to impress.

An excellent Game One.

Detroit won this one by dominating at the dot: 39-16 on faceoffs. They also outhit the Pens (43-39). Again, the Wings demonstrate their exceptional quality--NO ONE gets away without playing team defense.

Justin Abdelkader is 'The Sudden Unsung Hero' tonight with his very sharp reaction to a wild bounce and snapping in the insurance goal.

The Pingus, after a strong first period, seemed to get away from their game plan in the second and third. Can't do that.

Thoroughly entertaining contest, and the best part is--we get ANOTHER ONE tomorrow night--same Bat-time, same Bat-channel!
