Just saw this on tsn.ca...

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=280253
Jim Balsillie is expected to make a major announcement regarding Hamilton's Copps Coliseum today at 10am et/7am pt.

The billionaire businessman is currently waiting on the outcome of bankruptcy court proceedings in Arizona regarding the Phoenix Coyotes. Balsillie has made a US$212.5-million offer for the franchise under the condition he can relocate the team to Southern Ontario.

On Wednesday, Judge Redfield Baum scheduled a hearing for June 9 where he will hear arguments for and against the potential relocation.

Details to follow.
Interesting... anyone want to hazard a guess?

Does he have inside info on how the judge will rule or is he just a glutton for punishment? This smells an awful lot like the dumbass move he made selling Hamilton Preds season tickets in his previous bid.

I would hope his presser will contain the words "contingent on a decision in our favour..." and not just assume and start selling tickets.

More details have been added...
Jim Balsillie has announced the renovation plans for Hamilton's Copps Coliseum.

The project would see the arena updated with fan friendly features, new restaurants, food and bar amenities and a capacity for over 18,000. According to a media release, the update would also fully address all of the National Hockey League's previously stated requirements for Copps Coliseum.

"A new team for the best new hockey market deserves spectacular new home ice, and that's exactly what the upgraded Copps Coliseum would offer," said Balsillie in the release. "This facility will deliver unparalleled excitement and bring fans closer than ever to the action."
Sounds like he's counting his chicken before they hatch...

Unless he's doing this to show he's fully committed and that plans are in way to have a facility ready.

Upgrades to Copps is what I thought of as soon as I read the thread title. More than 18,000 still means it's not going to be 20,000. However you don't need 20,000 in the cap league. When your payroll was $90M you had to sell a lot of suites. With the cap at $56M and heading downward, that's no-longer the case.

I think part of the announcement would be the province or city's willingness to pony up some cash or other incentives to move this along.

It definitely looks impressive.

sounds like he will never learn, Bettman and the other owners are not going to stand for this, so far it seems to be a game of how far can Balsillie shove his foot in his mouth or head up his a**, either way, not good strategy either way.

Interesting quote from the TSN article:

"The Hamilton Spectator reports Balsillie has said he will sign a lease of up to 32 years and provide $5 million for the renovation project, the rest of the funds would likely come from government sources."

I thought he was putting in $30M initially...

Or he's showing the public and the NHL owners that his "commitment" is not just hot air. He's backing it up with plans and real groundwork.

And showing the judge as well.

Not bad for a guy who was apparently going to cower before the "big boys". Balsillie is nobody's fool no matter what anyone says.
