While hockey fans usually debate the merits of one superstar over another, who's overrated and who's underrated, what player you would start your team with, what stats mean what, and on and on, you have to wonder who the players are, who qualify for the title 'Unsung Heroes'.
It might be the PK or faceoff specialist; the fourth liner; the 'grit and sandpaper' guy; the backup goalie; or the stay at home defenseman...or maybe it's just a player you like to watch, not because he does anything in a noticeably exceptional way, but because he works an honest shift after shift after shift.
We all have our favourites.
For all the Boom Boom Geoffrions, there was a Claude Provost; for all the Henrik Zetterberg, there's a Kris Draper...and so on. There have been excellent goalies whose teams were rarely in the elite, like Eddie Giacomin; stars like Dale Hawerchuk who never won the Cup; and players like Shane Doan, who soldiers on in the desert, literally and figuratively.
Several Sens players have been talked about here might fall into that category; and many times, our esteemed members have brought the names of players they feel deserve a Special Kudo or two.
I thought it would be a good time to open up the discussion to players from all teams, at all positions, in all eras of the NHL.
So in this thread, I'd like to discuss who your favourite 'unsung heroes' are, then and now, and even looking ahead.
Who do you feel deserves recognition? Who do you feel has been, perhaps unfairly, forgotten?
Looking forward to your thoughts.
