Soooo...
I added a post to Proteau's page a few hours ago. In it, I respectfully pointed out a logical problem with the 2nd last paragraph in his recent article, which reads as follows:
"'Another source – the same one that told THN.com Thursday
Meszaros had agreed to terms with a team other than Ottawa on the
framework of a multi-year offer sheet – maintains the offer sheet was
presented and signed by Meszaros and that the presentation of that
offer sheet to the player has resulted in discussions between the Sens
and Lightning that 'could lead to a trade within the day.'"
I said that that doesn't make any sense because, as per pp.38 of the CBA, any offer sheet a player signs is considered a legal contract and that once it's signed, the GM for the team the currently owns the rights to the player can EITHER match OR pass and receive compensation. There are no other alternatives. Trading him, as the CBA explicitly states, is NOT an option: "Once an Offer Sheet for a Restricted Free Agent has been received by the Prior Club, the Prior Club may not Trade or otherwise Assign its Right of First Refusal for such Restricted Free Agent." I said that either he or his source must be confused, because what's said in that paragraph simply can't be true.
My post has since been deleted. I posted it again, asking for clarification as to why the original post taken down, and that post too was swiftly removed. Anything I now post doesn't even make it to the comments board. All this for casting some reasonable doubt on the trustworthiness of his source and/or his report.
So sad, so petty, and so shady. The guy's credibility is rapidly decreasing in my eyes.
Anyway, speaking as one fellow Sens fan to others like me in search of the simple truth, I would ask anyone who has a spare moment to go over to the article -- http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/17692-Multiple-sources-confirm-Meszaros-to-Lightning-deal-in-the-works.html -- and politely and respectfully reiterate this criticism (or any other one that the article raises in your mind, as it agrees with your good sense and conscience) until someone answers or he shuts down the whole comment section. Let's show him what 'free speech' means.
