I have a question regarding expansion. I wonder if anyone has read anything about it.

Can Vegas pick up say mark methot from us and then proceed to trade him a month later to another team for another player or is there a minimum amount of time that they will have to sit on the players they've poached from teams?

I'm wondering this because it might change how they go about picking up players. With Dmen being in higher demand, if they were aloud to poach and trade they might create some favourable opportunities for themselves if enough top 4 Dmen are left unprotected.

Same world where elderly priests get beheaded by ISIS fanatics.

I would imagine that Vegas would be free to trade any of their expansion draft players, but I'm not positive.

Yeah I just thought of this today. I mean it makes for a whole new strategy if you think about it. Might also make for very different pick ups. If I was Vegas I'd be looking to get as many players that I can trade back after my roster is full. Trade those extra players for some picks or young prospects. Would also explain what they would be planing to do with the 7 other poached players after they have completed a roster of 23.(without counting any players they may pick up through FA)

Here are the rules:

https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-expansion-draft-rules/c-281010592

There is an implicit rule stating that Las Vegas cannot buy out any player from the expansion draft earlier than the summer following its first season, but there is nothing about trading. So it appears that there are no restrictions like that.

Also, interestingly it states that they *must* pick one player from each of the 30 clubs.

They'll have 3 days from the deadline for clubs to submit their protected lists to making their expansion draft selections.

Wow, that leaves them with possibly picking up 3 tradeable players.
I bet they go and stock up on Dmen. Teams are going to be calling after having lost a top 4 dman!

They must pick 14 forwards and 3 goalies, which leaves 13 D as a max. So they certainly can draft more than they need for an opening night roster, then trade the rest. Here's the kicker, though:

* The Las Vegas franchise must select players with an aggregate Expansion Draft value that is between 60-100% of the prior season's upper limit for the salary cap.

The 30 players they draft cannot go over 100% of the preceding season's cap ceiling. This is not a limit placed on their opening day roster but on the players they drafted. That should prevent them from loading up on top-four D-men.

Ouch! Yeah that's a good clause to try and limit what they can do.
Will be interesting none the less.

They're spending way too much on goaltending. I thought that deal they gave to Howard was exaggerated when they gave it to him and it looks atrocious today. They'll need to retain some of it and trade him or cross their fingers he gets picked up in expansion. But I doubt it.
