I thought I would do a quick post on this and I assume Kaboom will add some more in-depth analysis later.
I must say that for a defensive-minded trap team, I was amazed Boston scored 5 goals. Granted, from last night's tilt, it was back and forth on the scoreboard for a good chunk of play, but a few things stuck out:
1) Bergeron seems to be right back in shape and doesn't appear to be showing any ill effects from that unfortunate hit he suffered early last season, courtesy of Randy Jones. His foot speed and puck handling seems to suiting him quite well.
2) Michael Ryder seems right at home in his new B's uniform and seems to have great chemistry on that 2nd line. I was glad to see him bury his goal as Bruin and no one seemed happier than Ryder himself!
3) It was glaringly obvious to me, as far as last night's game is concerned, that the B's have 3 genuine scoring lines that can pot goals when you least expect it; thus dispelling the myth that they are solely a trap team and have no serious scoring threats. I renew my opinion that the B's could be a tough team to beat in the always unpredictable Eastern conference.
4) the only big 'ouch' I saw last night was the B's defence. They looked slow and almost lost at times. Hnidy looked like he was hung over and/or in some serious need of tutelage; and same goes for Wideman. Chara seemed to be his usual self, although when Sakic pasted him early the first, seeing Chara get up a little wobbly had me worried for a bit.
So, all that to say that while the B's defense looked a little off last night, they still manage to hold off a last-minute surge by the Av's to walk away with 2 points in a 5-4 win, and assuming Julien can direct his D to play a little higher and be stronger on battles along the boards and if they can avoid these 'defensive lapses' I see a bright season for the B's.
