I was scanning an article on NHL players in reach of major milestones this year, and realized that both Alfredsson and Kovalev are within an arm's reach of getting 1,000 NHL points. Alfie has 992 points, and Kovalev is right behind with 990:

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2010/08/06/sp-nhl-milestone-chase.html?ref=rss

Alfie is also 25 goals shy of 400.

Then there's also Gonchar, 16 shy of 700 points, and Spezza has 25 points to go to get 500.

eading on over the the ex-Senators, Heatbag's next goal will be his 300th; and Hossa should get to 800 points this year and has a chance at 400 goals.

Alfie will hit 400 (career) goals - BOOK IT! And that means he will also reach 1'000 points! Sarcasm

Crazy that if a guy averages 50 goals/season he can reach 500 in ten years Ahhhhh!

I know it's not "crazy" but that it is pretty impressive to be able to do so (consistently score 50+ goal seasons for ten consecutive seasons).

Still nearly harder to imagine that Gretzky had 894 goals and 2,857 points in 20 "pro seasons" (1,487 games). Or that he scored 92 goals in 1981-82. Or 163 assists in '85-86.

Yeah, Gretzky's numbers are cartoonish.

Different era, but, yeah, still. That one, and Gretzky's goals/assists/points records are pretty much untouchable without significant rule changes. I can even see 50 in 39 being challenged by Ovechkin, but with his style of play I doubt he could keep it up for a whole season without getting injured or suspended.

He's not, he's simply saying that Ovechkin could challenge one of his records, not that they're anywhere near the same caliber of player.

Yeah it was just a thought that if anyone today were to be bale to tie or break or even come close to any of Gretzky's records, that someone (Ovechkin) might be able to score 50 goals through 39 games.

And yeah, don't think we see a rookie pot 70+ goals in his rookie season.

Lets not compare ovechkin to Gretzky

Thanks for the (unnecessary) lesson in history. I was not comparing The Great One to Ovechkin, just saying that 50 goals in 39 games is about the only scoring record I can see eventually be broken, and it wouldn't surprise me if Ovechkin was the one to do it. A weak division with a scheduled skewed to intra-division play, some weak goaltending, and there you go. Same as what happened with Gretzky. Some of those goals were kind of weak by today's standards, but that's what happens when you keep shooting from everywhere.

Some of the Zherdev critics might argue he'd be a guy that could score 50 in 39... then score 1 in the rest of the 43 games Sarcasm Could be said about a lot of streaky players though.

But to score 50 through 39 would likely mean you're on pace for 100, which is crazy. Even to come out with 75 is a huge stretch in today's NHL.

Bobby Orr's 46 goals is another one that has a slim chance, but not inconceivable, to be broken. My choice would be Mike Green (31). His 139 points surely won't be touched though.

Here are some CHL records:

Most goals in a season: 133 Mario Lemieux, Laval, QMJHL, 1983-84 (70 games)
Most recently: Kyle Reeves, Tri-City, WHL, 1990-91 (63 games)

Most goals in a season (defenceman)
: # 50 Lawrence Sacharuk, Saskatoon, WHL, 1971-72 (65 gms)
# 47 Bryan Fogarty, Niagara Falls, OHL, 1988-89 (66 games)
# 42 Marc Andre Bergeron, Shawinigan Cataractes, QMJHL, 00-01 (72 games)

and Fastest to 50 goals: # 27 games Bill Derlago, Brandon, WHL, 1977-78
# Mario Lemieux, Laval, QMJHL, 1983-84

And Mogilny, right?

EDIT: My bad, I always thought Mogilny scored 76 in his rookie year as well, but it was not.

No, not even close. Ovechkin's goal totals are massively inflated by his shot totals. Look at his shooting percentage, which is never even close to the top in the league, even only counting guys with a a couple of hundred shots or more.

Gretzky's numbers are mind-blowing. Half his career point totals is almost a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame. This is the one record in sports (and certainly hockey) that may stand through the ages. It's simply ridiculous, along with Ripken's ironman streak.
