Just got this via TEAM1200 Twitter.

Florida GM Randy Sexton is out and Dale Tallon has taken his place.

Good for Sexton. He didn't need that gong show anymore. Tallon will do a good job, though.

Holy cow, that's a massive move. Congrats to Tallon - who may have Diddled the Hawks six ways to Sunday, but they're still playing and they have as good a shot at anyone at a Cup.

For this to work, Tallon needs to have the reigns and have the freedom to do what he wants to do.

For example:

Horton needs to go, Vokoun needs to go, anyone of any value must go. Picks, prospects, it's time for a 100% culture change in Florida. All that middling talent must be moved - if that's even possible.

I doubt that was all him.

The talk is about the budget in FLA - whether Tallon will be forced by owners to spend the floor only.

If that's the case, you'd think he might explore trading a disgruntled Horton for youth and future, and Vokoun while his stock is high.

Thinking Really? Who else would it have been? He made the move for Campbell, that's fine, but to misplace all the paperwork on Bolland and Versteeg was unconscionable. Paying Crystalball Huet 5.25 is also a ridiculous mistake. Otherwise I thought he did amazing, but those are some reaaaaaaaaaaaaaal bad decisions.

Oh yeah, that's quite true actually. How annoying must that be? Diddle, every time one of your players does well you cringe because soon you can't afford him.

Even the top draft picks can earn nearly $4M when it's all said and done, which is what Horton costs.

IMO the teams that only spend to the floor on purpose (because they cant' afford it) need to be moved or a new owner needs to come in. I am all for a team spending the floor one year because they plan on making a huge splash the next or are saving room for their franchise players.

That may be a big reason for the signings based on potential. FLA needs a few of those and have them pay off massively.

the problem with being restricted to the floor is that you do not go out and sign big names, and instead you end up overpaying players just to make it to the floor. It's a bad thing and the NHL needs to do something about it, because those teams will keep losing if they lose their players.

They're about 3 years too early to get pretty good guys begging for jobs though. Guys squeezed out because of the cap/poor recent performance. Like Afiniganov, nerds like that who'll sign for a pittance (by NHL standards) and then try to cash in the year after.

Start with Alex Tanguay for 1.2 million, then move on to Prospal for 2 million, and so on. If they can only spend to the floor, then I agree with Dash, this is a scary move for Tallon because it's really hard to look good when you can't spend a dime.

Also a good point about their potential top 10 pick and their up-coming 1st round pick(s) from Horton/Vokoun/Ballard etc., they'll all be paid relatively well, their top 10 pick has the potential to make up to 3 million+.

The NHL doesn't care, the NHLPA will care though because there's only so much $$ to go around, soon guys will be squeezed out in lieu of cheap, young players who just want to earn 875,000 and play NHL hockey (not forgetting the long term pensions etc. that come with playing NHL hockey).

I'm disappointed by this. Sexton coached me in midget, great guy. His hands were pretty much tied by ownership, Tallon will make no difference that Sexton couldn't do.
