Wayne Gretzky is reportedly interesting in purchasing the National Hockey League's Dallas Stars.
According to the Dallas Observer, The Great One, Hall of Famer Brett Hull and current Stars alternative captain Mike Modano are joining forces in an attempt to buy the club from owner Tom Hicks.
“It's nothing formal, as if they're about to sign on the dotted line,'' the Observer quotes a source as saying. “But it's gone past kicking the tires. This could happen.''
Hull currently serves as the Stars' executive vice-president. Gretzky, who holds nearly every NHL scoring record, recently sold his minority stake in the Phoenix Coyotes and resigned as the team's head coach.
Hicks has reportedly said he is willing to sell his majority stake in the Stars and has hired Galatioto Sports Partners in an attempt to do so.
Hicks owns shares in English Premier League giant Liverpool and Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers.
The Stars moved from Minnesota in 1993. They had been known as the Minnesota North Stars since joining the league in 1967.
The Observer also said that any Stars sale would not get underway until Hicks is able to complete the Rangers sale to owner Chuck Greenberg. That deal is expected to be finalized later this month.
