I don't understand. What tryout? Why not just sign him?

It's not unprecedented. Selanne's doing the same thing in ANA right this moment. NYR obviously wants to sign Shanny, but Sundin may be in the mix, and at any rate, I think they have to clear up a little money before they sign anyone at all.

It's not unprecedented. Selanne's doing the same thing in ANA right this moment. NYR obviously wants to sign Shanny, but Sundin may be in the mix, and at any rate, I think they have to clear up a little money before they sign anyone at all.

NYR are also carrying Nylander on a tryout contract - and he was the first star in the game last night (deservedly, from all accounts). As said above, it may be a matter of protecting the players you want to have if you can't get Sundin. (Now how would you feel if you were them?)

Shanny turned it down actually. He wants a guaranteed contract, that's it. Same thing happened with Murray here. He was invited, but he turned it down for a guaranteed contract.
