Assuming it is indeed true Mezie signed an offer sheet at approx. $5M, is overpaying for him now going to pay dividends, or is it a colossal mistake on the part of his 'new' team?

Alright, with the frenzy of Mezie leaving the Sens fold, my next question is simple: out of the UFA D men left, who should and could Murray realistically target; and who would YOU like to see him snag?

Similarly, should we go the trade route, who could Murray make an offer to that would work? Depending on the answers for the trade, they can also but put up in our Armchair GM's thread and be voted on as well.

Sound off all. Let's hear your thoughts on this.

Well the proposal I'm thinking of has been put up once by me and once by Heater already so I won't make the proposal and just say I think Murray could go after Schneider and it would be fairly painless and it would be an excellent 1 year solution assuming he stays healthy of course.

Edit: Also I voted time will tell because I feel he has tonnes of upside and whether it's realised or not will sway my decision greatly.

You're right, and for what it's worth, K Lee is saying NO WAY Schneider comes here, nor is he on Murray's radar.

I think these mind-games, PR and media spins both sides are doing is ridiculous. Although, I really liked Murray's quote from the Sensplex yesterday about Mezie (courtesy of TSN.ca):

"I think Mez is a potentially good young defenceman who had a bit of an off-year this past year, and we've asked their camp to entertain that in what we're trying to do with him," Murray stated. "I think we've made more than a fair offer and put ourselves in a position where he could come here and, with some help, we think he can be a top player.
"We need their camp to help us in that area as well. I've tried to get that message across, but to this point, we haven't gotten there."

So, if that take is accurate, it seems once again that either Mezie or Rich Winter or BOTH feel he is ENTITLED to $$ that Murray feels he hasn't earned yet.

Murray has offered a very good deal & Mez is getting bad advice if he leaves. Being 22 and getting 3.5M is a great deal now and sets him up for a HUGE payday when this deal expires if he performs. I would like to see him back but not at 4M+ :bounce:

Murray went on record yesterday saying he'd just promote from within. Meaning our 6th d man will be either Nycholat, Bell or Schubert.

Oh yeah, I saw that quote. I just can't believe Murray is being completely honest. For me, if he says he wants to promote from within, and considering he seems to have an almost iron-clad Gag order in place, he could very well investigate a trade and we wouldn't be the wiser until it's done.

It's just my theory.

If he does got that route, we would probably need at least forward to play the point on the power play, if not two. Lee for sure can play there, and so could Schubert. I guess one of either Bell or Nycholat could also play there. But I would be surprised to see Philips, Volchenkov, or Smith on the PP.

I wonder if Murray`s statement is more of a way not to show weakness to other GMs with whom he might want to make a potential trade for a defenceman. That way they can`t try and highball him.

Something that I have not seen mentioned is the length of the offer sheet. I've only seen mentioned that it's "long term". What if it's, say 7 years @ $5.5M/year. Yeah, that's a HUGE total amount, but in a few years, that $5.5M may look pretty good.

I dunno, just a thought.

If it's 5.5M then I take the 2 firsts , 1 second, and 1 third without even thinking twice shabbs. Now I could be wrong but it's 2 firsts once you hit over 5.3 isn't it?

That's strange because we all know Murray as already inquired the Schneider route, but whatever.

Meszaros is overrating himself big time. The guy is not worth a penny over $3 million. That's one thing I love about Murray is he won't over pay for anyone.

Yes.

$3,923,437 - $5,231,249: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick
$5,231,249 - $6,539,062: Two 1st's, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick
$6,539,062 or more: Four 1st round picks

I wonder if the offer is for $5.2M then in order to stay away from the two 1st's?

Would your answer change if it was 7 years @ $5.2M/year?

Don't rule out Ncholat in all of this too. He has the potential and the way the NHL is going, the smaller mobile defencemen are just what the doctor ordered.

A 3rd pairing of Nycholat and Bell would be quite mobile, but to be honest I am not sold on Bell in the least. Hopefully he comes in here guns a blazing and finally reaches the potential he has always had.

Have you heard the rumor that it's for 6 years at around $5.5-6 ???
