I doubt they'll want 6M each. Things have changed. Look at the Carter/Richards contracts for likely comparables.

Tough to say, I think they will command top dollar. Some of the best players in the league already.

Keith may want 6 since Campbell is making so much as a 3-4 dman.

Dreger breaks it down in his blog:

Hossa will make $59.3 mil in the first 8 years and $3.5 over final four.

So this is really a $7.4 x 8 deal. In the 8th year of this deal he will turn 38 in January. I would not be surprised if he retires after that.

Hossa...a 40-goal scorer and excellent two way player.

Here Come The Hawks.

The official release from ChicagoBlackhawks.com:

BLACKHAWKS SIGN HOSSA TO 12-YEAR DEAL
Ink C Kopecky to 2-year contract
ChicagoBlackhawks.com. July 1, 2009

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed right wing Marian Hossa to a 12-year contract and center Tomas Kopecky to a two-year contract.

“To add Marian, an elite and world-class player, and Tomas, a Stanley Cup Champion, to our exciting young core reinforces our commitment to try to win the Stanley Cup,” Blackhawks General Manager Dale Tallon said.

A four-time NHL All-Star, Hossa has played in 11 seasons in the NHL with Ottawa (1997-2004), Atlanta (2005-08), Pittsburgh (2008) and Detroit (2008-09), recording 719 points (339G, 380A) in 775 regular season contests. He has appeared in 98 Stanley Cup Playoff games (31G, 45A), including reaching the Stanley Cup Final in each of the last two seasons.

Last season, Hossa, 30, led the Red Wings in goals (40) and finished third in points (71) during the regular season before chipping in 15 points (6G, 9A) while appearing in all 23 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Following the regular season, he was named to the 2008-09 NHL Second All-Star Team. The Trencin, Slovakia native was originally drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the first round (12th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

Kopecky, 27, also spent the 2008-09 season in Detroit, his fourth with the club. He finished second on the team with 109 hits while posting career highs with six goals, 13 assists and 19 points in 79 regular season games. The Ilava, Slovakia native also dished out one assist in eight Stanley Cup games with Detroit last season. He has appeared in 183 regular season games with the Red Wings over the last four seasons notching 32 points (12G, 20A) and 113 penalty minutes.

Kopecky was originally drafted by Detroit with their second choice (38th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

Two Slovaks. Excellent signing.

Kopecky gives the Hawks depth at center...this presumes Sammy Pahlsson is leaving.

It appears Tallon has stolen a page from Ken Holland's playbook with this one.

Well, this time he's decided to give himself a dozen seasons before having to admit he made a mistake.

Hossa will certainly help the Hawks in the regular season. But if he runs into Detroit in the semis or Pittsburgh in the finals ...

I think now that he's out of that two team scenario, it will get the monkey off his back, and he can move on. Who knows, it just may be what the hawks need to beat the wings .... poetic justice once again!

Well, thank you for suggesting the Blackhawks will be playing Detroit in semis and the Pens in the Finals.

A word about Mr. Hossa...I worked many years ago in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Slovaks always took a lot of crap from the Czechs...but wonderful, determined, hard working people. Very humble and very motivated.

Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky will be HUNGRY for a Stanley Cup. And that can only be good.

Na zdravie! Stolicka!

From ESPN's live UFA blog, Scott Burnside weighs in...

BURNSIDE'S INSTANT ANALYSIS ON HOSSA SIGNING: For the second straight year, Chicago GM Dale Tallon brought home the goods on the first day of free agency.

With money in short supply in Detroit, top free-agent forward
Marian Hossa signed a 12-year deal with Central Division-foe Chicago that will cost the Hawks an average of $5.2 million annually.

Hossa was a key figure in the Wings' five-game series victory over Chicago in the Western Conference finals this past spring. Now, he'll be asked to help get the Blackhawks over the hump as they chase their first Stanley Cup since 1961.

A year ago, Tallon landed top defenseman
Brian Campbell and top free-agent netminder Cristobal Huet on the opening day of free agency.

Now, you can quibble with the relative value of both Campbell and Huet, both of whom signed expensive, long-term deals with Chicago, but they were nonetheless part of a young Blackhawks team that revitalized the game in Chicago and advanced to the conference finals for the first time since 1996.

Now that he's locked up Hossa for a dozen years, Tallon's challenge going forward will be in being able to afford all of his top assets, including
Patrick Kane, Brent Seabrook, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith. Look for Tallon to try and find a taker for Campbell, whether it's today or down the road.

The move makes the Blackhawks a definite power in the Western Conference, regardless of the fact that Hossa had a disappointing postseason in Detroit. With Kane and Toews to shoulder the load in terms of media and expectations, the soft-spoken Hossa should thrive as he did in Pittsburgh after the 2008 trade deadline and in Detroit during this past regular season (he had 40 goals).

The move takes another impact forward off the market and will ramp up interest in players like
Martin Havlat, Mike Cammalleri (his agent, Ian Pulver, was too busy to take a call about an hour ago), Marian Gaborik and, of course, Dany Heatley.

The move also puts more pressure on teams like Montreal, Los Angeles, Minnesota and the
New York Rangers, all of whom are looking to add elite forwards.

I think Cam Barker gets traded.

Only 12 years? Why not go for the long term deal? This is of course because of the over 35 clause. If he retires before the end of the deal, which he certainly will, the team is off the hook. That's a loophole in circumventing the cap that will be closed quickly the next time the CBA comes due methinks.
