Smid is an RFA this year, Cogs is the next. So Penner and Cogs combined is a cap hit of 5.38 plus whatever we sign Smid to. So realistically, there would be a savings.
We may need to replace Volchenkov next year as he is a UFA. Smid is 23, calling him a low end defenceman might be a bit premature.
According to that feeble minded ape Garrioch, the Sens have been shopping Smith and Picard. The former I can understand, but the latter? Didn't we hand pick him in the Meszaros trade last season?

Sorry to deviate from the thread but can anyone get on Spector's web site?

Picard is expendable due to the acquisition of Campoli IMO.

It's apparently 'down for maintenance.' Happens regularly, when he updates, I think. Should be back to normal in 5 minutes. Just keep trying.

Re: Summer Dany Heatley hits
Ya, I'm not buying that either. Smith I can see...the experience and leadership will appeal to some teams. Picard I assume was taken knowing he would be a project so trading him after 1 year seems contradictory...PKC wrote:Vandelay wrote:We'll resign Volchenkov before he gets close to UFA status. strachattack wrote:I take it if Heater isn't traded by noon today this will seriously hamper Murray's chances to sign a FA. If true, that sucks. It seems no matter what deal they get (most likely in the mediocre range like the deal from Edmonton) for Heater the true icing on the cake will be cap savings. The true worth of the trade can't be judged until that extra cap space is used. By the time Heatley is dealt with there will be nothing but scraps left over to plug a hole or two.
Thing is, we are not contenders this year, and there will be more UFAs next July, to say nothing of deadline deals. I mean, are we really thinking of signing someone like Gaborik?

Expendable should not equal discarded. The way they are talking now we'd throw him in on the Heatley deal to get back some of that $4M. It's as if otherwise they'd be buying him out.

Why not Gaborik?
He plays almost60 50 40? games a season
He can score when he's not sulking
He costs an arm and a leg
He's a perfect replacement for Heatley.

Just throwing that name out as an example. I'm really talking about *any* high-priced, high-end forward. We can get away without having one this season, possibly even next. In 2010/11 we will definitely have Karlsson in the lineup full-time, and very likely Wiercioch as well. In fact, he looks about ready now, but I hear he's committed to DU for one more year. Cowen would have challenged for a spot in the lineup this season if not for that injury, so he's lost some development time, but less than a full season. He may very well be ready for 2010/11 as well.
So it would really be great to get some high-end forward talent then. Where's that link of free agents by year? Who is available July 2010?

Useless to speculate on free agents for next off-season. The list inevitably ends up being nowhere near what it looked like the season before.
And with all these 10 year+ contracts, July 1st may become less and less important.

Add Auld , Smith and Schubert to save another $4.4M. Then get a pick coming the other way to even it out.

He's much faster, though. There would be a lot fewer drop-back passes at the blue-line from Spezza.
