We may need to replace Volchenkov next year as he is a UFA. Smid is 23, calling him a low end defenceman might be a bit premature.

We'll resign Volchenkov before he gets close to UFA status. My point about Smid is that we already have Picard and Lee and we didn't resign Bell...Smid seems to fit that same profile.

According to that feeble minded ape Garrioch, the Sens have been shopping Smith and Picard. The former I can understand, but the latter? Didn't we hand pick him in the Meszaros trade last season?

Ya, I'm not buying that either.  Smith I can see...the experience and leadership will appeal to some teams.  Picard I assume was taken knowing he would be a project so trading him after 1 year seems contradictory...

Why not Gaborik?

He plays almost 60 50 40? games a season
He can score when he's not sulking
He costs an arm and a leg

He's a perfect replacement for Heatley.

In 2010/11 we will definitely have Karlsson in the lineup full-time, and very likely Wiercioch as well. In fact, he looks about ready now, but I hear he's committed to DU for one more year. Cowen would have challenged for a spot in the lineup this season if not for that injury, so he's lost some development time, but less than a full season. He may very well be ready for 2010/11 as well.

So it would really be great to get some high-end forward talent then. Where's that link of free agents by year? Who is available July 2010?

Useless to speculate on free agents for next off-season. The list inevitably ends up being nowhere near what it looked like the season before.

And with all these 10 year+ contracts, July 1st may become less and less important.

Add Auld , Smith and Schubert to save another $4.4M. Then get a pick coming the other way to even it out.

He's much faster, though. There would be a lot fewer drop-back passes at the blue-line from Spezza.

Heatley has yet to decide. Oilers are still very much in play.as per Dreger (Twit)
