The Senators would take back almost as much in salary as Heatley's $7.5-million US_salary-cap hit.

"Nothing to report," Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini told ESPN.com late Tuesday night.

If completed, as expected, the deal would have come in the nick of time for the Senators, who were on the hook for a $4 million signing bonus at midnight ET.

What if Melnyk insisted that Murray take the best offer available before midnight in order to save the 4M. Surely that is plausible.
