While hockey fans usually debate the merits of one superstar over another, who's overrated and who's underrated, what player you would start your team with, what stats mean what, and on and on, you have to wonder who the players are, who qualify for the title 'Unsung Heroes'.

It might be the PK or faceoff specialist; the fourth liner; the 'grit and sandpaper' guy; the backup goalie; or the stay at home defenseman...or maybe it's just a player you like to watch, not because he does anything in a noticeably exceptional way, but because he works an honest shift after shift after shift.

We all have our favourites.

For all the Boom Boom Geoffrions, there was a Claude Provost; for all the Henrik Zetterberg, there's a Kris Draper...and so on. There have been excellent goalies whose teams were rarely in the elite, like Eddie Giacomin; stars like Dale Hawerchuk who never won the Cup; and players like Shane Doan, who soldiers on in the desert, literally and figuratively.

Several Sens players have been talked about here might fall into that category; and many times, our esteemed members have brought the names of players they feel deserve a Special Kudo or two.

I thought it would be a good time to open up the discussion to players from all teams, at all positions, in all eras of the NHL.

So in this thread, I'd like to discuss who your favourite 'unsung heroes' are, then and now, and even looking ahead.

Who do you feel deserves recognition? Who do you feel has been, perhaps unfairly, forgotten?

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Jere Lehtinen, although he does have some trophy recognition.

Alex Burrows, though he's been subsequently recompen$ed for his play since I gained that impression of him.

Zbynek Michalek, Maxim Lappierre (much as I hate him), and Brendan Witt are a few others I can think of off the top of my head.

This is where having fans from a number of different teams would come in useful.

One of my current favourites is Sammy Pahlsson.

I've always respected his efficiency as a checking center for the Ducks. But I rarely got to watch him play until he was traded to the Blackhawks this March.

I also got see him 'live' when I went to the Hawks game at the Bell Center last week, and he is a player you don't really notice until you look at the box score and see the faceoff he wins and the hits he dishes out. He's not a bad goal scorer either.

Pahlsson gets my vote because he brings a sense of what I call 'game intelligence' to his team. Knows where he should be on the ice, makes few high risk plays, and makes his teammates better through his dependable, consistent two way effort.

Plus, IMHO it's just cool to watch him work.

Here's an interview with him:

I've also tried to embed this...hope it works...

You mention Pahlsson - isn't that the same type of play that Kelly gives us here in Ottawa (minus the faceoffs) or that Vermette gave us?

Pat Stapleton...

Willie Plett.

The list is pretty amazing when you start thinking about it...

Red Kelly, now that brings me back.

Johnny Bucyk is another name to think about.

True that.
Couldn't do anything with it, though.
