Ripping Heatley at this point is just like pistol whipping a blind kid.

Re: Dany Heatley quick hits
But do I want a trade for trade's sake? We have a little cap space left, and if Smith goes on the LTIR or we manage to move some more salary (Kelly, Schubert, a spare defenseman) then we probably have some room to add a decent (if aging) top-six forward.
A good return will come eventually, even if it might take until the trade deadline.
Alternatively, we could take back a bad contract, as long as it's short-term, and the rest of the trade provides a great return. I'm OK with keeping him here until a better return is available.

Re: Dany Heatley quick hits
I don't buy that...I've already said it but again, I don't see how the return is going to get better. There is a chance he sucks it up and comes to play at the start of camp but I would put the odds at 75% that he doesn't show for camp if a trade is not done by then. If that happens, his value won't get better, just worse as time goes on. If a trade is not completed in the next couple of weeks, the window gets a lot smaller as far as a value for value trade.wprager wrote:But do I want a trade for trade's sake? Re: Dany Heatley quick hits
Well, right now the GMs are looking at giving up a roster player, prospect and pick for Heatley, or trying their luck at signing Hossa, Gaborik or Havlat for nothing. Once the big-name UFAs are out of the way, there will still be GMs looking for star power and scoring, and there will be fewer of those available.
So, while your list of buyers will be smaller, so will the list of sellers. In fact, it will get to a point where there is no-one else remotely approaching Heatley's stature as a bona-fide star and potential 50-goal man. And assuming the list of buyers is non-zero, the ratio of buyers to sellers goes through the roof.

I would bet money he doesnt sit out. He has no leverage. He isn't an RFA with no contract. He has a valid contract. If he sits, he doesn't get paid, and lessens the opinion of him in potential suitors. It's one thing to sit out without a contract when a team holds your rights. In that case, it's basically your only move. But unless Heatley is prepared to basically ruin his reputation FOR FREE, he isn't sitting. It's just not happening.

How much more can his reputation handle after *his parents' neighbor* wrote to the newspaper to leave poor Dany alone? He's going to get a rough ride in pre-season from young guys trying to make it to the NHL just to play for the league minimum.

Just to change topic.....What could be the trade package for/from Edmonton to acquire Heatley? You have to figure in that if Calgary is upping the ante, Edmo cant be that far off from making their own waves.
