Joe Mauer is something special

Post by SpezDispenser on Tue Aug 18, 2009 12:22 pm

As we get later into the baseball season, usually guys will tail off a little. Someone hitting .350 will find themselves around .320 now.

But Joe Mauer is still hitting .380. .380....20 percentage points away from .400. Now the likelihood of him hitting .400 is low, but imagine, if you will, how dominant a performance this is.

As of now he's 20 percentage points higher than the Hall of Famer (to be) Ichiro.

Ridiculous. A tip of the hat is required.

How long before he's scooped up in a trade by the Yankees or Bo Sox? We ought to have a pool.

.380 is extremely impressive.

Never (I hope). He was born and bred in Minny, he apparently loves it there.

was the last time someone hit this high this late in the season when John Olerud flirted with .400 until he felt to .363? Ichiro is one hell of af contact hitter too, so Mauer has to be an excellent hitter, don't watch many Minny games, so have no idea.

Well, he has one the batting title before... first catcher to ever do it in the MLB...

He finished with an average of .347.

Not too shabby.

When this is used as a reference point, it really illustrates what an amazing hitter Ted Williams was.

Tony Gwynn was quite the hitter as well, not saying he is up to Ted Williams standards, it's a different game now and all players have more advantages than the guys like Mantle, Gehrig, Ruth, Aaron, and Williams.
