Mistakes apleaty as the Stars and Ducks begin their seasons
DALLAS – Jonas Hiller and the Anaheim Ducks made the best of their opportunities against the Dallas Stars.
The Ducks had two power-play goals and the Swiss goalie stopped 19 shots in a 4-3 shoot-out victory against the Stars before a sell-out crowd Thursday.
A day after signing Michael Peca and Miroslav Satan and finding out that Samuel Pahlsson had an undisclosed illness, Anaheim started Hiller in goal and hoped for the best.
"It was a good opportunity to find out what type of character our team really has," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "We weren’t quite sure how all of the off-season changes were going to affect our team. I challenged our guys and I loved the response.”
Ryan Getzlaf, Teemu Selanne and Joffrey Lupul all scored for Anaheim.
Set up by Getzlaf, Selanne opened the scoring 6:52 into the game while Kim Johnsson, was off for interference. Getzlaf lofted a pass to the short side were Selanne was waiting to burry the puck behind a sprawling Marty Turco.
"It was nice to score early," Carlyle said. "We had more energy early in the game now, we got a lot of loose pucks and had four lines capable of scoring and making plays. It was good to see some consistency out of our guys."
With just over 5 minutes remaining in the first, the Ducks, on the power play again, struck again. Getzlaf rocketed a one-timer from Selanne over the right shoulder of Turco.
The Ducks excitement wouldn’t last long though. Just 2:40 later, with Scott Niedermayer in the box for holding, the Stars struck back.
Stephane Robidas fired at full speed from the right wing, and Loui Ericsson was a split-second faster to the rebound than defenseman Nick Boynton and put it into the net for his first goal of the season.
Late in the second, the Stars couldn't convert on a two-man advantage for 30 seconds but a few minutes later, newcomer Alexei Kovalev took a pass from Filip Kuba to tie the game.
Early in the third period, Ericsson scored his second of the game while Bryan Allen was off in the box for interference.
Joffery Lupul would tie the game 14:49 into the third on a 3 on 2 odd man rush. Craig Conroy rushed up the right side and fed s pass to Steve Eminger who shuffled it to Lupul.
The Ducks would then win 3-2 in the shoot-out.
It’s a good way to start the season,” Carlyle said. “Do we have things to fix? Yes. But it’s a win.”

Perry Wakes Up as Ducks Win Again
ANAHEIM – The Ducks needed their Power Play to shine as their shots rang off the posts. Ducks shooters had 6 of their 44 shots ring off the post.
“I don’t know what was happening.” Craig Conroy said, “It was if the puck had a magnet inside.”
Anaheim opened the scoring at 6:37 when Joffrey Lupul scored, his second of the year, taking a feed from Conroy.
The Ducks followed the goal up 2 minutes later with a power play tally when Corey Perry notched his first of the year from Andrew Ebbett.
"I just wanted to give the team a chance to win," Perry said. "I watched other guys getting it done and knew I had to pitch one in. I saw (Ebbett) behind the net and got into an open spot.”
Colorado’s Scott Hannan and T.J. Hensick scored in the waning minutes of the first and early part of the second to keep the game close. That is when the Ducks defense shut down the game.
“We knew we hadn’t been playing the best hockey.” James Wisniewski said, “We had to shut them down. We had a lapse, but we recovered.”
The game tightened up until Perry and Ryan Getzlaf paired up to net the game winner. Getzlaf faked around the net to feed Perry in the slot, who shot the puck glove side high to beat Craig Anderson. Anderson finished the game facing 44 shots
Game notes
Ducks C Samuel Pahlsson was out again with an undefined illness. Avalanche forward Milan Hejduk left the ice briefly for 10 minutes, but returned, the Avalanche reported he had an upper body injury but would be fine...

Punchless Coyotes Look Like Sitting Ducks
ANAHEIM—In the past few games, for all the shots the Anaheim Ducks have had turned aside and the others that hit posts instead of finding the net, it was only fitting they finally broke through with a deflection.
When Saku Koivu’s even-strength goal opened the scoring at 7:15 into the game, an audible and collective “phew” could be heard from the Duck’s bench. All they needed was a perfect performance from backup Jonas Hiller, who made 16 saves in the Ducks' first win in 5 games, 3-0 over the Phoenix Coyotes Tuesday night.
Koivu passed the puck from behind the net to an incoming Evgeny Artyukhin that clipped Coyote defenseman Adrian Aucoin's stick and caromed up and over goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, inside the left post.
"We’ll take those each and every time. We’ve been struggling, so it was good to get one in the net.” Said Koivu, “Who wouldn’t?”
"It's a tough play," Aucoin said. "You try to get in front of shots, but you don’t try to score on your own goalie. I was hopping that when I got back to the bench the Coach would have told me that I had been traded moments before, at least then I would have gotten credited for a goal and felt less sheepish.”
Two minutes later the Ducks were at it again. Teemu Selanne took a feed from Scott Niedermayer in the neutral zone and split two defenders to beat Bryzgalov on the short side.
Hiller stopped 9 shots in the second period after a quiet start and earned his first shutout of the year.
Little-used forward Samuel Pahlsson scored his first goal of the season 11:17 into the second to make it 3-0 with an assist from Scott Niedermayer. Niedermayer sent an outlet pass up the boards to the lone Pahlsson for the breakaway.
“For a while I’ve been thinking that maybe my team had forgotten me,” Pahlsson said, “So I was surprised when Niedermayer got me the puck.”
“The play looked really good,” Niedermayer said, “but to be honest, the Coyotes were bringing some tough pressure so I was trying to ice the puck. It wasn’t until I saw the red light go on that I realized what had happened.”
