Re: Twenty20 World Cup Fixtures - England 2009
ICC World Twenty20 2009 - Group B
Lord's
England 162-5 (L J Wright 71) v Holland 163-6
Holland beat England by 4 wkts
England suffered their biggest embarrassment in limited-overs history in a four-wicket defeat to minnows Holland at Lord's.
There
had been high hopes England might mount a serious challenge for the ICC
World Twenty20 on home turf, which were raised by a record-equalling
opening stand of 102 by Ravi Bopara (46) and Luke Wright (71).
But
the last 10 overs yielded just 73 runs as the hosts set a total of
162-5 in an innings that failed to deliver one single six.
Big hitting
Darron
Reekers (20) managed two maximums of his own off the first three overs
and Tom de Grooth (49) and Peter Borren (30) put the visitors in a
great position to win.
At the half-way mark the Netherlands were 91 for three, with De Grooth and Borren going nicely as the rain began to fall.
De
Grooth's impressive 30-ball innings ended when he got a leading edge to
a Paul Collingwood slower ball and gave a gentle catch to Rob Key at
short cover, though.
But England were starting to show real nerves
in the field, missing run-out chances that might have made a difference
and, despite Borren holing out for 30, the Dutch were 133 for five in
the 16th over.
When Daan Van Bunge drove Anderson straight to Luke Wright, the Dutch were left with a target of 17 off 12 balls.
Contributions
right through the order proved telling, though, and with seven runs
needed off the final over it could still have gone either way.
Five
nervy singles then followed before Edgar Schiferli hit two off the
final ball when bowler Stuart Broad's shy at the stumps went for an
overthrow.
Difference
Essex all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate finished unbeaten on 22, having earlier recorded figures of 2-35 with the ball.
His
removal of county colleague Bopara and Wright proved decisive as
England, missing Kevin Pietersen from their team because of an Achilles
injury, failed to find the big shots they needed to push the score on.
Owais
Shah (five), Eoin Morgan (six), Paul Collingwood (11), Key (10 not out)
and James Foster (three) all failed to make significant impacts.
The
loss leaves England humiliated and needing to beat Pakistan on Sunday
to stand any chance of qualifying for the Super Eights stage.
